Fajr Salah is among the greatest prayers before Allah, the Exalted. It marks the beginning of a Muslim's day, in which he renews his connection with his Lord before beginning his work and daily tasks. Whoever maintains it becomes accustomed to discipline, feels a sense of tranquility, and begins his day with energy and blessing. For this reason, Islam gave great attention to Fajr Salah, granting it a tremendous status in the Noble Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah.

The Status of Fajr Salah in Islam
Allah, the Exalted, made the five daily prayers obligatory as a mercy to His servants, granting each prayer its own virtue and status, and among the greatest of these is Fajr Salah, because it comes at a time when many people are heedless in sleep.
Allah, the Exalted, says:
﴿أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا﴾
(سورة الإسراء: 78).
What is meant by "Qur'an al-Fajr" here is Fajr Salah, which Allah described as "witnessed" (mashhoodan), because the angels of the night and the angels of the day both gather during it. This points to its honour and its tremendous status.
Allah also commanded the preservation of all the prayers, saying:
﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾
(سورة البقرة: 238).
Maintaining Salah includes performing it at its proper time and being diligent about it every single day.
The Virtue of Fajr Salah
Many Hadiths in the Prophetic Sunnah point to the virtue of Fajr Salah and its tremendous reward.
The Prophet ﷺ informed us that whoever prays Fajr is under the protection and care of Allah throughout his entire day.
He ﷺ also explained that Fajr and Isha are the heaviest prayers upon the hypocrites, because they both require real effort against one's own self, and for this reason, whoever maintains them is among the people of true Iman.
Among its virtues also is that whoever prays Fajr in congregation attains a tremendous reward, and this becomes a means of increasing Iman and strengthening one's connection with Allah, the Exalted.
The Effects of Maintaining Fajr Salah
Maintaining Fajr Salah leaves beautiful effects on a Muslim's life, including:
Strengthening Iman and increasing one's connection with Allah
Beginning the day with remembrance, supplication, and tranquility
Accustoming oneself to discipline and commitment to timeliness
A feeling of energy and blessing in one's time
Protecting a Muslim from laziness and negligence
Instilling a love of obedience in the heart
For this reason, the righteous were keen to maintain Fajr Salah, considering it a successful beginning to a day filled with obedience and beneficial work.
How Do We Accustom Ourselves and Our Children to Fajr Salah?
Maintaining Fajr Salah requires training and effort. Among the means that help with this are:
Sleeping early and staying away from late nights
Setting an alarm and waking up the first time it rings
Reciting the night Adhkar
Supplicating to Allah to help one rise for Salah
Encouraging family members to wake one another up
Reminding children of the virtue of Fajr Salah in an encouraging and gentle manner
Rewarding children for maintaining it until it becomes a habit for them
Raising children upon Fajr Salah is not achieved through commands alone, but through good example, kind words, and continuous encouragement.
The Role of the Family and Educational Institutions
The family and the school have an important role in instilling a love of Fajr Salah in children's hearts, through:
Explaining the virtue and importance of Salah
Accustoming children to sleeping early
Being diligent about performing Salah in front of them, so they follow the example of their parents and teachers
Connecting Fajr Salah with love and closeness to Allah, not only with fear or punishment
Establishing programs and activities that encourage students to maintain their Salah
As children grow up accustomed to Fajr Salah, it becomes part of their lives, and they come to feel its value and its good effects.
Fajr Salah is not merely the beginning of the day; it is the beginning of Iman, tranquility, and blessing. Whoever maintains it maintains his connection with his Lord, and welcomes his day with a tranquil heart and an energetic soul. For this reason, we should be diligent about performing it at its proper time, and raise our children to love it and maintain it, so that they grow up attached to Salah, close to Allah, the Exalted.
