We live today in a time when information has become available to everyone; with the press of a button, a young person can access thousands of lessons, video clips, and books. Yet despite this abundance, a question remains: why are some young people more influenced by a particular person than by the information they hear?

The answer is that Tarbiyah is not merely the transfer of information; it is the building of a human being, and this building requires a relationship founded on trust, love, and good example. Information may reach the mind, but what usually changes behaviour is the person who reaches the heart.

For this reason, the successful educator is one who combines knowledge with good character, and guidance with mercy, becoming a role model that young people follow, not merely a person they listen to and then forget what he said.

  • Who is the inspiring educator?

  • Why are young people more influenced by those they love than those they merely know?

  • How do we build an impactful educational relationship?

  • How does an educator become a role model in worship and character?

Who Is the Inspiring Educator?

The inspiring educator is not the one who talks the most, nor the one who possesses the most information; rather, he is the one who turns knowledge into behaviour, and makes values present in his own life before calling others to them.

Among his most important traits:

Honesty

A student notices his educator's actions before he listens to his words.

If he sees that the educator practices what he preaches, his respect for him grows, and he becomes more willing to learn from him.

Closeness to Young People

Young people need someone who listens to them, cares about them, and makes them feel valued.

The more a relationship is built on love and respect, the greater the educator's influence becomes.

Good Example

The best means of Tarbiyah is for the student to see values applied in front of him.

Smiling, justice, faithfulness, patience, and sincerity — all of these are lessons young people learn through observation far more than through explanation.

Why Do Young People Follow Those They Love?

Knowledge alone may convince a person's mind, but it is not enough on its own to change behaviour.

When knowledge is combined with love and trust, however, a young person embraces learning willingly, and tries to follow the example of someone he loves and respects.

For this reason, love is among the most powerful means of influence in Tarbiyah.

A student who feels that his teacher respects him and cares about him accepts guidance from him even in difficult situations.

But if the relationship loses its spirit of affection, advice may turn into words that leave no impact.

An Educator of Information, or an Educator of the Human Being?

There is a great difference between someone who focuses only on transferring information, and someone who makes building the student's character his goal.

  • The educator whose role is limited to transferring information focuses on memorizing and dictating knowledge, while the inspiring educator is diligent about building Iman, character, and behaviour alongside developing knowledge.

  • The educator of information generally relies on an abundance of instructions and commands, while the inspiring educator makes good example, dialogue, and love the foundation of the educational process.

  • An approach based on rote instruction often achieves only a temporary response, while inspiring Tarbiyah leaves a deep and lasting effect on the character and behaviour of the one being raised.

  • The educator of information is often preoccupied with finishing the lesson and completing the content, while the inspiring educator views teaching as a means of building the human being and preparing his character in a balanced way.

For this reason, the true educator does not measure his success by the amount of information he has delivered, but by the impact he has made in the hearts of his students.

How Do You Become an Impactful Educator?

There is a set of principles that help an educator build a strong relationship with young people, including:

Understand the Personality of the One You Are Raising

Not all young people are alike; each has his own way of thinking, different interests, and particular circumstances.

The more an educator knows his students, the better he can guide them.

Focus on the Greater Values

Tastes and interests may differ, but fundamental values such as honesty, trustworthiness, kindness, and respect are the foundation an educator should be diligent about.

Guide, Don't Impose

Young people accept dialogue more readily than direct commands.

Listen to their opinions, discuss with them, and help them reach conviction, rather than simply issuing instructions.

Build Trust

When a young person feels that his educator respects him, keeps his secrets, and values his circumstances, the relationship grows stronger, and guidance becomes more effective.

Tarbiyah Through Example in Acts of Worship

Among the areas where the effect of a role-model educator appears most clearly is the teaching of acts of worship.

A student may learn the rulings of Salah from a book, but he learns to love Salah when he sees his educator approach it with Khushu', finding in it his rest and tranquility.

The same applies to other acts of worship: seeing the educator practice what he calls others to helps students realize that religion is not information to be memorized, but a life to be lived.

Good example opens hearts before it opens books.

True Influence Begins with the Relationship

The more young people love their educator, the more willing they become to benefit from him.

This does not mean the educator abandons firmness when needed; rather, he combines mercy with steadfastness, and gentleness in approach with clarity in principles.

Souls naturally incline toward those who treat them well, respect them, and make them feel valued.

Tarbiyah is not merely explaining books or transferring information; it is the shaping of a human being, and the building of minds and hearts together.

Be diligent in being a role model in your worship, your character, your words, and your dealings, and make your relationship with young people one built on love, respect, and trust.

When young people see in you a genuine embodiment of what you call them to, they will not only learn knowledge from you — they will learn how to live that knowledge in their own reality. And this is where the impact that lasts for many years, by Allah's permission, is truly achieved.
