Many fathers and mothers believe that providing their children with food, clothing, education, and healthcare means they have fully discharged their educational duty. In reality, however, care alone does not shape a righteous human being, just as Tarbiyah cannot exist in isolation from care. The two go hand in hand, yet they are not one and the same. A gap often appears when parents content themselves with fulfilling the duty of care, while neglecting to build character and instill values — so children grow up with every comfort available to them, yet lacking the compass that should guide their lives.

What Is Meant by Care?

Care refers to everything related to preserving a person and attending to his basic needs so that his life can proceed soundly. It includes providing food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, psychological security, and daily oversight of children's affairs.

It is a great responsibility that Islam has commanded, because a person cannot grow naturally if deprived of his basic needs. For this reason, care represents the foundation upon which the educational process is built.

What Is Meant by Tarbiyah?

Tarbiyah, on the other hand, is a deeper and broader process, whose goal is to build the human being from within — attending to his creed, his character, his behaviour, his way of thinking, his relationship with his Lord and with people, and his ability to make decisions and bear responsibility.

Tarbiyah is not limited to teaching commands and prohibitions; it works to form a living conscience that drives a person to do good even in the absence of anyone watching.

Care Attends to the Present... Tarbiyah Builds the Future

Care generally focuses on today's needs: what does the child eat? Where does he study? How does he maintain his health?

Tarbiyah, however, looks toward the future, asking: what kind of person will he be twenty years from now? Will he be honest? Responsible? Firm upon his principles? Able to face trials?

For this reason, a family's success is not measured only by the comforts it has provided its children, but by the values it has instilled in their hearts that will remain with them throughout their lives.

Why Might Care Alone Fail?

A child may live in a home that provides for all his material needs, yet not learn respect for others, honesty, bearing responsibility, or self-control.

Here the problem appears: care has preserved the body, but has not built the character.

For this reason, we sometimes see young people who grew up in the best living environments, yet are unable to make a sound decision, resist their desires, or bear pressure — because the educational dimension did not receive sufficient attention.

Tarbiyah Gives Care Its Meaning

Care without Tarbiyah may produce a person who depends on others, and who demands his rights without fulfilling his duties.

But when care is paired with Tarbiyah, the child learns to be grateful for blessings, to preserve them, and to feel a sense of responsibility toward his family and society.

Tarbiyah turns everything the family provides into a means of building the human being, rather than mere services rendered to him.

Care is an indispensable necessity, but it is not the end of the road — it is only its beginning. Tarbiyah is what transforms a child from merely a person growing physically into a mature character who knows his Lord, treats people well, and moves through life guided by firm values. A successful family is one that combines the warmth of care with the depth of Tarbiyah, neither neglecting its children's needs nor forgetting to build their hearts and minds.
