The Courage to Be Different: When a Young Person Swims Against the Current

Young people today live in a rapidly changing world, one in which media and social platforms overflow with ideas and trends urging people to imitate one another and chase after every new thing, to the point that many now measure success by the number of followers, fame, or material gain.

Islam, however, calls the Muslim to possess an independent character, one that builds its positions on truth, not on what the majority does. A believer does not follow the crowd if it contradicts Allah's command; rather, he remains firm upon his principles, making Allah's pleasure his ultimate goal.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِي الْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ﴾ [الأنعام: 116]

Allah created man to carry out a great mission, saying:

﴿هُوَ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ وَاسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ فِيهَا﴾ [هود: 61]

For this reason, true distinction does not lie in opposing people merely for the sake of opposition, but in remaining steadfast upon the truth and acting in a way that pleases Allah, even if this contradicts what people have grown accustomed to.

What Does It Mean to Be Different?

Being different does not mean opposing everything around you, or seeking distinction by any means; it means making truth your standard, so that you do not change your principles to please people or go along with the status quo.

"None of you should be a yes-man, saying: 'If people do good, I will do good, and if they wrong others, I will wrong others.' Rather, train yourselves so that if people do good, you do good, and if they do evil, you do not wrong others." (Graded weak by Al-Albani as a Marfu' Hadith, though authentic as a saying of Ibn Mas'ud, mawquf)

The Muslim character, then, is built on principles, not on society's pressures or shifting whims.

Steadfastness on Principles Builds Character

A person who lives for principles possesses inner stability, because he knows that truth does not change when people change.

But whoever makes immediate self-interest his standard remains hesitant, changing his positions every time circumstances shift.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ﴾ [هود: 112]

And He, the Exalted, says:

﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا﴾ [فصلت: 30]

Uprightness (Istiqamah) grants the heart a tranquility that people's approval or admiration can never provide.

The Starting Point: Knowing Yourself

Whoever wants to be impactful must first know himself.

He should know his points of strength in order to develop them, know his points of weakness in order to address them, and not let his view of himself depend on people's praise or criticism.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ﴾ [القيامة: 14]

Self-accountability is among the greatest means of progress, because it leads a person to continually review his deeds and correct his mistakes before they accumulate.

Iman... The Source of True Courage

Courage is not merely strength in confronting people, but strength in remaining steadfast upon the truth.

The more the heart's attachment to Allah grows, the more capable a person becomes of resisting society's pressures, because Allah's pleasure means more to him than people's approval.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِكَافٍ عَبْدَهُ﴾ [الزمر: 36]

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Guard Allah's rights and He will guard you. Guard Allah's rights and you will find Him in front of you..."

Whoever places his trust in Allah is not shaken by the abundance of those who oppose him, and does not sell his religion for a fleeting gain.

How Do We Face Society's Pressures?

Young people today face many challenges, the most notable of which include:

First: Compromising Principles for Self-Interest

A person may face pressures pushing him to abandon certain rulings of his religion or his character in order to achieve a quick benefit.

But a believer knows that blessing lies only in what is lawful.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا ۝ وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ﴾ [الطلاق: 2-3]

Second: Prioritizing Material Success Over Character

Islam does not oppose success, but it ties success to excellence and mastery.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah loves that when one of you does a job, he does it with excellence." (Reported by Abu Ya'la and At-Tabarani; graded authentic by Al-Albani in As-Sahihah based on its supporting narrations)

Third: Weak Social Relationships

A Muslim does not live for himself alone; he seeks to benefit people and strengthen the bonds between them.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The believer to another believer is like a building, one part supporting the other."

Fourth: Blind Imitation

Not everything that spreads widely is correct, and not everything people do deserves to be followed.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ﴾ [الإسراء: 36]

A believer weighs ideas by the standard of the Sharia, not by the standard of fame or popularity.

How Do You Build a Creative Character?

Creativity does not mean opposing people; it means offering good in beneficial and innovative ways.

Among the most important means of developing creativity:

• Linking authenticity to renewal

• Perseverance and refusing to give in to failure

• Considering more than one solution to a problem

• Accepting criticism and benefiting from it

• Searching for opportunities rather than focusing on obstacles

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Be keen on what benefits you, seek Allah's help, and do not give in to helplessness." (Sahih Muslim, 2664)

Habits Build Character

Ideas alone are not enough; character is transformed through daily habits.

For this reason, a Muslim needs to:

Start, and Don't Postpone

The hardest step is the beginning; once a person starts, continuing becomes easier.

Repeat Righteous Deeds

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The deeds most beloved to Allah are those done most consistently, even if small."

Consistency builds character, even if the deed is small.

Connect the Habit to Its Outcome

The more a Muslim remembers the reward of obedience and the consequence of disobedience, the more diligent he becomes in continuing to do good.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

﴿فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ ۝ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ﴾ [الزلزلة: 7-8]

Being different does not mean seeking to oppose people; it means having the courage to remain steadfast upon the truth even as those around you change.

Make the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ your standard, and never place people's approval above Allah's pleasure.

Remember the words of the Prophet ﷺ: "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, though there is good in both."

Be a person of principle, strive for excellence in your Iman, your character, your knowledge, and your work, and let your distinctiveness stem from your commitment to the truth, not from a love of being seen. In this way, you create a good impact on yourself and your society, and attain Allah's pleasure in this world and the next.
