Staying up late has become part of daily life for many young people today, whether due to studying, work, or excessive use of phones and electronic devices. Some may think that this reality stands between them and Qiyam al-Layl (the night prayer), so they keep postponing this act of worship until their circumstances change.

But Islam is a religion of ease, and it does not burden a person with more than he can bear. For this reason, beginning does not require long hours of standing in prayer; it may start with two sincere Rak'ahs, a single Rak'ah of Witr, or a few minutes in which the servant stands before his Lord with a present heart.

From this standpoint, Qiyam al-Layl is not an act of worship reserved only for those who can wake up long before Fajr; it is an open door for anyone who wants to make their night an opportunity for intimacy with Allah, even if the beginning is small.

  • Why does today's youth need Qiyam al-Layl?

  • The fruits of solitude at night and their effect on the heart

  • How does the Qur'an help us with Qiyam al-Layl?

  • Khushu' matters more than the number of Rak'ahs

  • Practical steps for an easy and lasting start

  • How do you make Witr the closing of your day?

Why Does Today's Youth Need Qiyam al-Layl?

A person's day is filled with preoccupation, pressures, and countless distractions, to the point that calm has become rare in the lives of many people.

For this reason, the night remains a precious opportunity for a person to be alone with his Lord, away from the noise of life, reviewing himself, renewing his Iman, and drawing strength to face a new day.

Allah, the Exalted, praised those who perform Qiyam al-Layl, saying:

﴿كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ ۝ وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ﴾ [الذاريات: 17-18]

Qiyam al-Layl, then, is not merely an additional prayer; it is an educational school that sets right the heart and strengthens one's connection with Allah.

The Fruits of Solitude at Night

Praying at night bears tremendous effects that appear in a Muslim's life, the most important of which include:

Purity of Heart

At night, distractions decrease and noise settles, so the heart becomes more ready for Khushu' and sincerity.

For this reason, worship performed in solitude is further removed from showing off, because it is between the servant and his Lord alone.

Peace of Mind

After a day filled with concerns, a few minutes of Qiyam grant a rest that no amount of entertainment can provide.

Standing before Allah, reciting the Qur'an, and making Du'a fill the heart with tranquility and peace.

Strengthening Iman

Consistency in Qiyam al-Layl increases the heart's attachment to Allah and strengthens a Muslim's resolve in facing desires and trials, because he draws his strength from his worship and his solitude with his Lord.

The Qur'an Helps You with Qiyam al-Layl

Among Allah's mercies is that He made the Qur'an easy to memorize, recite, and reflect upon.

He, the Exalted, says:

﴿وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴾ [القمر: 17]

So do not feel that you are required to recite long Surahs at the start of your journey.

Begin with what you have memorized of the shorter Surahs or the verses you repeat in your Salah, and make presence of heart your priority over the quantity you recite.

A single verse reflected upon with Khushu' may have a far greater effect than many pages recited by the tongue without presence of heart.

Khushu' Matters More Than the Length of the Prayer

Some people think that Qiyam al-Layl can only be achieved through a long prayer, but this is not true.

The greater objective is presence of heart and Khushu'.

Among the means of achieving this:

Tuma'ninah in Salah

Do not rush through bowing or prostration; give yourself time for stillness, for calmness of the limbs helps bring presence of the heart.

Remembering Allah's Greatness

Remember that you are standing before Allah, the Exalted, and that these moments may be among the deeds most beloved to Him.

Reflecting on What You Recite

Try to contemplate the meaning of the verses and connect them to your life, for this increases the effect and Khushu' of your Salah.

Practical Steps for Small Beginnings

You are not required to begin with what the great worshippers of the past used to do; you are only required to begin with what you can manage and sustain.

Here is a simple plan:

A Manageable Beginning

  • Two light Rak'ahs, followed by Witr

  • Making use of part of your time if you are already awake late at night

  • Reciting what you have memorized while reflecting on its meaning

  • Focusing on consistency, even if the amount is small

A Difficult Beginning

  • Praying a large number of Rak'ahs

  • Waking up long before Fajr

  • Reciting complete portions of the Qur'an

  • Seeking perfection from the very start

A small deed done consistently is more beloved to Allah than a large deed done sporadically.

How Do You Make Witr the Start of Your Path?

If you sleep late, do not deprive yourself of Qiyam al-Layl under the excuse that you won't wake up before Fajr.

You can pray two Rak'ahs and then perform Witr before you sleep, and in doing so you will have attained a share of Qiyam al-Layl. Over time, you will find yourself able to increase it.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make Witr the last of your prayers at night." (Reported by Al-Bukhari, 998, and Muslim, 751)

Let the Rak'ah of Witr become a daily habit that you never abandon, whatever your circumstances.

Tips to Help You Stay Consistent

  • Do not postpone beginning until your circumstances improve.

  • Make your goal consistency, not quantity.

  • Put your phone away a few minutes before Salah so your mind can settle.

  • Ask Allah to help you rise for Qiyam, for success comes from Him alone.

  • Do not despair if you miss a night; simply return the very next night.

  • Remember that the deeds most beloved to Allah are those done most consistently, even if small.

Qiyam al-Layl is an open door for every Muslim, not something reserved for those who pray at length or have memorized a great deal of the Qur'an.

If you are among those who sleep late, do not let that be a reason to abandon this act of worship. Instead, invest the last few minutes of your day in two sincere Rak'ahs, in a Witr prayer that closes your day, or in a Du'a in which your heart speaks intimately to the Lord of all the worlds.

With the passing of days, this small beginning will turn into a blessed habit, and you will find its effect in the tranquility of your heart, the strength of your Iman, the blessing in your time, and the sweetness of your closeness to Allah, the Exalted.

We ask Allah to grant us the sweetness of Qiyam, to give us a lasting share of the night in Salah, remembrance, and Du'a, and to keep our hearts firm upon His obedience until we meet Him while He is pleased with us.
